Information

Purista is a geometric sans serif with a distinctly technical character. Its letterforms are based on rectangular proportions, simple geometric forms, and strictly horizontal or vertical terminals. Despite its systematic construction, optical corrections ensure balanced proportions, rhythm, and legibility throughout the family.

Alongside the core family, the type system now includes the narrower Cond, the wider Wide, and the monospaced Mono. All four families are available in a broad range of weights, from Thin, which reveals the precision of the geometric construction, to Black, which transforms the same principles into dense, assertive forms.

Each weight is available in two slanted variants: Italic introduces distinctive forms for selected lowercase characters, creating a more pronounced contrast with the upright, while Oblique retains the construction of the upright. Stylistic sets provide further alternatives, allowing the character of the typeface to be adjusted without compromising its underlying structure.

Purista combines a strong visual identity with an unusually broad range of expression, making it suitable for typography at very different scales — from visual identities and information systems to editorial design, user interfaces, and bold display typography.

Le Corbusier and Amédée Ozenfant were the founders of Purism, with Fernand Léger playing an important associated role. Purism emerged in post–World War I France as an effort to reintroduce clarity, order, and stability in response to the disruptions caused by the war.

The designation “Prince Philip” refers to the period when Philip II of Spain, born in 1527, had not yet inherited the Spanish monarchy through the abdication of his father, Emperor Charles V, in 1556. The term “Serlian” derives from the influential architect and theorist Sebastiano Serlio, whose name is also associated with the architectural feature known as the Serlian arch in classical architectural theory. The terms Greco-Roman, purist, and casticist relate to different interpretations of stylistic elements, whether intellectual, formal, structural, or decorative in nature. During this period, authors commonly described the classical forms of the Italian Renaissance as “Roman”, as seen in Diego de Sagredo’s Las Medidas del Romano (1526), while late Gothic forms were referred to as “modern”. According to a broader stylistic periodization frequently used in art history, the 16th century had already entered the Mannerist phase of the Cinquecento. In Spanish art history, however, the term High Renaissance is typically applied to this period, while the final third of the century is often described as the Low Renaissance period, especially in architectural and decorative artistic contexts across Iberian territories and influential colonial regions under Spanish political and cultural dominance.
