Information

Rounded fonts are typographic styles characterized by soft, smoothly curved lines, with their main feature being the rounded terminals of individual strokes. This gives them a friendly, modern, and often playful character. Thanks to their simplicity and flowing curves, they are highly legible, especially in digital environments, which is why they are often used in user interfaces, mobile applications, and web design.
From a psychological perspective, rounded fonts feel approachable, open, and informal. They evoke a sense of safety, gentleness, and human warmth, distinguishing them from sharp-edged or more technical-looking typefaces. For this reason, they are frequently used in communication aimed at a broad audience when the goal is to appear accessible and user-friendly.

The kaleidoscope, invented by David Brewster in 1817, became extremely popular. Manufacturers such as Carpenter and Westley quickly began mass-producing it, selling over 200,000 units within just three months in London and Paris. The same company also produced magic lanterns—early projection devices used in visual shows—by introducing efficient manufacturing techniques based on copper plate printing. These lanterns commonly featured images of royalty, plants, animals, and landmarks from around the world. Another important invention was the zoetrope, created by William George Horner. This device produced the illusion of motion by displaying a sequence of images in rapid succession and became especially popular in the 1860s. At the same time, children’s toys reflected social norms of the era. Middle-class girls often played with miniature dolls and dollhouses made from wood or porcelain, while boys commonly played with marbles and early toy trains. The peak period of toy development took place during the Industrial Era. Rising real wages in Western societies meant that even working-class families could increasingly afford toys for their children. At the same time, advances in precision engineering and mass production made it possible to produce toys on a large scale to meet growing demand. There was also a growing belief that a happy and healthy childhood was important for a child’s development, which further encouraged the expansion of the toy industry. In 1880, German pharmacist Franz Kolb created plasticine, a soft modeling material, which began to be commercially produced as a children’s toy in 1900. Another key figure was Frank Hornby, a pioneer in modern toy design.

Meccano was a model construction system made of reusable metal parts such as strips, plates, gears, wheels, and axles, all connected with nuts and bolts. It allowed users to build working mechanical models and devices. Dinky Toys helped pioneer die-cast manufacturing with miniature cars, trains, and ships, while model train sets became especially popular during the 1920s. Meanwhile, the Britains company transformed toy soldier production by introducing hollow casting in lead in 1893, setting a long-standing industry standard. Puzzles also gained popularity during this period. In 1893, Angelo John Lewis, writing as Professor Hoffman, published Puzzles Old and New, a collection that included dozens of mechanical puzzles and became an important reference work. The Tangram, originally from China, spread widely across Europe and America during the 19th century. In 1903, Beatrix Potter created the first soft toy based on her character Peter Rabbit, registering it officially and making it the earliest licensed fictional character merchandise. This success led to a range of related products, including books and games, and helped establish the modern model of character licensing that continues to be used today. At the same time, changing social attitudes toward childhood played a major role in the growth of the toy industry. Enlightenment ideas emphasized children’s rights to education and leisure, contrasting with earlier periods when many children worked in factories or contributed labor at home. Increasing awareness of child labor exploitation led to reforms and laws in Western countries, eventually ending widespread child labor. As childhood came to be seen as a time for play and development rather than work, demand for toys and recreational goods grew significantly. During the Second World War, several new toys emerged as the result of accidental discoveries. Earl L. Warrick unintentionally created a stretchy, elastic material while attempting to develop a substitute for synthetic rubber. This substance was later marketed as Silly Putty after Peter Hodgson recognized its potential as a children’s toy. Similarly, Play-Doh was originally invented as a wallpaper cleaner before being repurposed for play. Another well-known invention from this period was the Slinky, developed by Richard James in 1943. While experimenting with springs for military use, he noticed one falling and moving in a unique way, which inspired him to refine the design into a toy that became widely popular across the United States.
