Can there be anything erotic about a typeface? A seemingly absurd question can provoke quite complex answers. The depiction of natural human bodies in visual art is as old as art itself, so it is not surprising that the first copperplate initials composed from naked human bodies appeared in Europe soon after the development of the printing press, e.g., in Peter Flötner's anthropomorphic alphabet from the first half of the sixteenth century and many of his subsequent interpretations (Martin Weigel, 1560, Jost Amman, 1567, Giacomo Franco, 1596, etc.). From the naked body, it is only a step to the copulating couple (or triple, depending on the complexity of the character depicted). So, in the nineteenth century, thanks to Joseph Apoux, we got a genuinely pornographic alphabet. The theme continues to appear in various interpretations (e.g., Salvador Dali: Paul e Gala, 1931), and thanks to the sexual revolution, it experiences a juicy boom in low-budget magazines. But can there be anything erotic about the typeface itself? It's hard to say and depends mainly on the observer's imagination. We're all familiar with the concept of sexy curves. Can bézier curves be sexy? Are sophisticated ligatures synonymous with something secretly erotic? Extreme kerning pairs with something intimate?
Eroticon is a high-contrast serif typeface with a distinctly narrow shape. Wide alternations of rounded characters and swash variations give the typeface an unmistakable character and dynamic nature. The character set, in addition to the extended Latin alphabet, includes Cyrillic and Greek alphabets.
