Information

The initial motivation for creating Botanika was the desire to develop a text version of the Magion typeface. Although the characters were initially drawn with the same proportions, they were subsequently modified to improve readability. The typeface retains some characteristic features of its source, such as the upper ascender serif of the letter “i” and a similar lower oustroke serif of the letter “l”. Reducing the x-height has given this family a new and original character. The italics are slightly narrower than the regular style without losing the upright’s austere elegance, and they are distinctive enough to stand out in the text. Alternative characters can enliven the text or, conversely, soften headlines by using more traditional letterforms.
The Mono version is a monospace font with a 10-point pitch. This means that at 10 pt, 10 characters fit exactly within the width of one inch, so individual letters occupy 60% of the em width. This family also includes a corresponding italic version.
Despite its lower x-height, the typeface is reliably used for typesetting medium- to long-length texts. Its slightly archaic feel adds a touch of uniqueness to the text. If you’re looking for an alternative to cold, neutral sans-serif typefaces, Botanika is the proven choice.

The oldest surviving manuscript of the 4th-century Pseudo-Apuleius Herbarius dates to the 6th century. It contains stylized illustrations of plants accompanied by descriptions of their medicinal applications. In Europe, early interest in the study of plants was shown mainly by monks, nuns, and physicians. Medicinal herbs were cultivated in monastic gardens and used both for personal care and for treating the sick within nearby communities. Hildegard of Bingen also addressed natural medicine and remedies in her works Causae et Curae and Physica.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, botany gradually emerged as an independent scientific discipline, distinguishing itself from herbalism and medicine while still contributing valuable knowledge to both fields. Its development was shaped by several important factors, including the shift from miniature painting and woodblock printing toward more advanced and precise illustrative techniques. Continuous improvements in the printing press enabled more efficient dissemination of botanical knowledge across Europe.

In 1533, the first European professorship of botany was established in Padua. The Italian physician and botanist Luca Ghini founded the Orto botanico di Pisa in 1544 with the support of Cosimo I de’ Medici, creating the first university botanical garden in Europe, and in the same year he produced his first herbarium. Ghini is generally credited with introducing the concept of the herbarium, known as hortus siccus (“dried garden”), probably developed between 1520 and 1530. His compatriot Ulisse Aldrovandi assembled one of the earliest floras in the mid-16th century, while Jacopo Ligozzi collaborated with both Ghini and Aldrovandi. Pietro Andrea Mattioli’s major botanical work, Commentarii in libros sex Pedacii Dioscoridis, was first published in Italian in 1544 and initially contained about 500 engravings, later expanded to roughly 1,200 illustrations. This publication strongly influenced the botanist and artist Gherardo Cibo, who produced detailed images of plants shown with roots, flowers, and fruits, often placed within landscapes representing their natural habitats. Many illustrations also include small figures of botanists collecting plant specimens. The work Discorsi, created by Pietro Andrea Mattioli and illustrated by Gherardo Cibo between 1564 and 1584, is preserved today in the British Library. Euricius Cordus, considered one of the founders of botany in Germany, wrote the Botanologicon in 1534. His son Valerius Cordus (1515–1544) produced several influential texts, including Historia stirpium libri V, published posthumously in 1561, in which he described 502 plant species. Like his father, he relied on careful observation and classification of plants previously discussed by Pedanius Dioscorides. The Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner devoted a significant part of his life to botanical research. His studies significantly shaped early modern botanical classification and education throughout Europe widely.
