The stencil typefaces was for decades associated primarily with the military environment, which demands a universal display typeface than can quickly and easily be applied to crates of equipment or provisions and military technology. It is not as if this purpose has entirely vanished in the 21st century, but the variety of projects and hunger for fresh typefaces have opened up room for stencil fonts in many new, previously unsuspected areas. Pacifista augments the expressive scope of the graphic designer with this distinctive artistic principle.
Pacifista takes advantage of the well-tested structure of our constructed typefaces, the directness and simplicity of which are by far the best suited to stencils. Straight lines, regular arcs and purity of drawing facilitate maintaining the maximum possible legibility even in typeface that is practically devoid of any joining of strokes.
Apart from a wealth of accented characters and arrows, a novelty of the set consists of an alternative, single-storey lowercase “a” and tabular numerals.
The range of five weights and five true italics overturns the widespread belief that stencils are single-purpose typefaces for a preordained, limited scope of application. Particularly in combination with other members of the ideological super-family (Nudista, Kulturista, Idealista), it constitutes another piece in Suitcase Type Foundry’s large mosaic of geometric typefaces.
